PLEASING EVERYONE

Since an old man and his son wanted to sell their donkey at the village market far away from their home, they had to take the animal along a dusty country road to the town. They had just left their home when a neighbor called to them. "Why are both of you walking, when you have a donkey?" the neighbor asked. "One of you ride, and the other can lead him." "That's a good idea, "the old man said, and put his son on the donkey while he continued to lead.

They were about halfway to town when three women standing by the side of the road scolded the boy. "You should be ashamed of yourself, riding while your father has to walk," one of the women said. "Is the donkey so weak that he can't carry both of you?"

You're right, I guess," the old man said. "Let me get on behind you, son." The donkey, carrying the old man and his son, had almost reached the town when a group of villagers began laughing at them. "You should be carrying the poor beast, instead of making him carry both of you," one of the villagers said. "I suppose so," the old man said reluctantly as he and his son get down. With the help of the still laughing villagers, they tied the animal to a pole so that they could carry it the rest of the way to the market. But as they were crossing the bridge just before the marketplace, the donkey kicked loose from the pole and fell into the stream and drowned. "Our donkey is dead now, and it should teach us," the old man said sadly to his son. "Wherever we try to please everyone, we lose."

THE INTERRUPTED DREAM

While taking a nap on the porch, one hot summer day, Hodja dreamed that a stranger promised to give him ten pieces of gold. The stranger placed them in Hodja's hand one by one until he reached the tenth piece, which he hesitated to give him.

"Come on! What are you waiting for?" said Hodja. "You promised me ten!" Just then he woke up. Hi immediately looked at this hand saw that it was empty. He quickly shut his eyes again, stretched out his hand and said, "All right, I'll settle for nine!"

GO PLACIDLY AMID THE NOISE & HASTE, & REMEMBER WHAT PEACE THERE MAY BE IN SILENCE. AS FAR AS POSSIBLE WITHOUT

Surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly & clearly; and listen to others, even the dull & ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain & better; for always there will be greater & lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well asa your plans. Keep your interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity & disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue & loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. Your are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a righ to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labours & aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy.

TOO MUCH EDUCATION IS DANGEROUS. IF PEOPLE RECEIVE MORE EDUCATION THAN THEY NEED TO FUNCTION THEIR JOB, IT ONLY BREEDS DISSATISFACTION.

Some people may say that education gives people unrealistic ambition; the law of the market decrees (keputusan) that not everyone can be managing director. In fact for every boss there must be many employees, so some country believe there is very little point (no use) in training people for a level of job that they can never hope to achieve. What is more, education is expensive. Therefore over-education is waste of time and money. Another argument against education would be that students tend to be disruptive influence on soceity. Once you encourage people to think for themselves it is difficult to control what they are thinking. It is hardly surprising that students are often found at the forefront of radical organizations.
In spite of the problems of over-education, most countries need a high standard of human resources in order to compete in the word market. Constantly changing technology means that the work force has to be flexible and receptive to new ideas in order to be of value to employees. When a person is only trained to perform one job, it is not realistic to expecthim or her to adapt to a change in circumstances or unexpected problem. All this is not to mention the moral questions involved in limiting education. Who has the right to say how much education a person is entitled to? What criteria culd be used to decide a level of schooling?
It may be true that a greater level of education tends to make people more radical. However, if soceity is not going to become static, it must be prepared to accept new ideas. Therefore degree of radicalism caused by a high level of education can only serve to make the country more adaptable and better able to with stand social change in the long run.
